Băile Tuşnad Spa Town
In the valley of the river Olt, at an altitude of 650 m, sourrounded by mountains covered of pine woods, lies the "Perl of Transylvania", Băile Tuşnad spa town [Wikipedia, Google Maps]. Located in the southern reaches of the Ciuc depression, in Harghita county (coordinates 46°9'N 25°51'E), between the Harghita and Bodoc mountains, it is the smallest town in Romania by population.
There are 44 mineral springs in the area, from which only 6 are used for internal and external treatment. Used as internal cure, they are effective in treating digestive problems, stomach diseases, functional bowel disorders, chronic gastritis, enterocolitis, biliary dyskinesia, metabolic and nervous system disorders. External treatment (baths) is recommended in case of cardiovascular diseases, circulatory problems, rheumatism, neurasthenia, physical and intellectual fatigue.
The subalpine climate, the ozone-, aerosol- and negative ion rich air give the resort it's tonic-stimulant bioclimate, ideal for mental and physical recovery.
The town is accessible on road DN 12/E 578 (about half way between Sfântu Gheorghe and Miercurea-Ciuc) or by train on route 400 Bucureşti-Deda [locate on Google Maps].
Local Tourist Attractions
- Lake Sfânta Ana (altitude 950 m) - located 25 km from town, is a famous volcanic crater lake, the only of it's kind in Central and Eastern Europe
- Mohoş Peat Bog (1056 m) - a florist reservation, located near Lake Sfânta Ana, home for several rare plants that survived from the latest ice age
- The Franciscan Church of Şumuleu-Ciuc - a late baroque style church housing one of the greatest pipe organs in Transylvania (35 km from town)
- The Tuşnad Gorge and the Olt valley
- Şoimilor Rock (848 m)
- Pilişca Peak (1374 m)
- Băile Bálványos spa, Bálványos Castle ruins, the Bird Cemetery of Bálványos (a natural trench filled with hidrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide gases)
